In 1911 my Grandfather Mr F.J Churchwood purchased Clynells farm in Daccombe. Included in the land was a small 3acre field at the head of which was an 18th century quarry gravel pit. At the base of this pit lies a very productive fresh water spring.
In which grew wild watercress. My grandfather would pick some once a week and sell it to Trace’s Dairy at Babbacombe.
Around 1925 my father and his brother enlarged the existing bed and began regular sales into Torquay receiving 1 penny per bunch.
I have added 2 more fields to the original site and now have approx 1000m2 which produces about 4000kg of quality organic watercress per annum.
The fields are still fed by the original spring which has never faltered, doesn’t freeze and maintains an even temperature of around 55F. In 2005 I applied for and obtained organic certification from the soil association.
I find it amazing that watercress has been grown and sold from this wonderful water source for over 100 years! A business I look forward to continuing!
